Operations
Normal medical operations are based out of Waynesboro's five Type 1 box ambulances. These consist of a truck chassis with a mounted box-style patient care compartment. Although these are expensive to purchase initially, the boxes can be remounted on future chassises and reused. Type 1 ambulances are well suited for use in the area, providing a roomy patient care area with numerous outside compartments. They handle well both in the city and on rural roads in hazardous weather conditions.
Although all ambulances are equipped with advanced medical supplies and medications, ambulances are staffed on calls based on the nature of dispatch:
- "Rescue" level ambulances provide basic life support services and are staffed by a EMT-B.
- "Trauma" level ambulances provide advanced life support services to patients requiring a higher level of care and are staffed an EMT-ST or EMT-E.
- "Medic" level ambulances provide the highest level of advanced life support services to patients with life-threatening injuries and illnesses and are staffed by an EMT-CT, EMT-I, or paramedic.
Special operations include motor vehicle accidents, water rescue, and technical rescue. WFAC operates both a heavy rescue truck and medium rescue truck, both equipped with Hurst "jaws of life" equipment and a variety of equipment for other rescue situations. Extricators are required to maintain currency in the Crew's extrication training program in addition to keeping a current vehicle rescue card. All extricators are also required to take other rescue courses in specialties other than vehicle rescue. For water rescues the Crew has an active dive team, a water rescue van, and two boats. The dive team regularly trains with a surface support team.
