Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment varies based on your level of membership. For more
information please look at the levels of membership. All members must take an
8-hour course in CPR at the Professional Rescuer level.
What will I be expected to do while I'm on duty?
In addition to answering calls, duty crews must complete house chores such
as emptying trash and straightening up around the building. All members are
expected to check the trucks that they run on at the beginning of each shift to
ensure that they are well-stocked and in good running order.
How much will I get paid? Are there any costs associated with membership?
The Crew is staffed entirely by volunteers - no one is paid in return for
their services. There are no costs to join the Crew: all uniforms and training
are provided by the Crew at no cost to members.
Can I sleep on duty?
Yes, members may sleep at night when not answering calls. Linens are
provided.
What training is available?
In addition to EMT training, the Crew offers a variety of classes such as
EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course), vehicle extrication, and rope rescue
throughout the year. For training opportunities throughout Virginia, the Crew
covers hotel and transportation expenses. Advanced life support classes in the
Central Shenandoah EMS Council are also available for EMTs wishing to obtain
further medical training.
